What if my employer refuses to give me a reference?

Your employer owes a duty both to you and any prospective employer. If your employer categorically refuses to give you a reference, consider whether anyone outside your employer can be approached for a reference, for example someone you worked with in the recent past who no longer works for your employer.

Who can you use as a reference if you’ve never worked?

Here’s who to include instead:

  • Your Favorite Professor. Depending on how big your graduating class was, you may have a few professors you can think to ask, or you may have just one.
  • The Family Member or Friend You’ve Done Work For.
  • An Older Student You Shared a Class With.
  • A Leader From Your Past.

What to do when you don’t have a reference?

Consider these steps as you ask someone to act as a reference for a potential job:

    1. Make a personal connection. When you ask someone to be a reference, make it as personal as possible.
    2. Be specific and open.
    3. Renew an old contact.
    4. Give them tools to verify your success.
    5. Show gratitude.

What to do if you dont have a reference for a job?

Make sure the person you’re using as a reference is credible, such as a boss or manager. You could also include a reference for freelance work you did for a client. If anyone has ever paid you for any type of work, reach out to them and ask if you could use them as a reference. Keep in mind that you should try to keep it relevant.

Is the problem of having no references necessarily a bad?

The problem of no good reference, is a function of your work environment, the best you can do is use the people that know you the best at work at the time of the interview. Basically before you go to the interview ask the best possible references if they would be willing to be a reference.

When do you ask for references with addresses, do you?

If it’s a personal reference, then either would do. You should always ask your references’ permission to use them as references, so that would also be a good time to ask them if they would like their work or home numbers/ addresses given. The exception would be your previous work references, which, usually would be given with the work address.

How to list references if they no longer work there?

If the reference is retired or unemployed, list the title they held when you worked with them professionally, or a title the the reference is using during retirement. Robert Lee has been an entrepreneur and writer with a background in starting small businesses since 1974.
